Welcoming Dr. Robert Bowser as ALS Arizona’s New Board Chair

ALS Arizona is proud to welcome Dr. Robert Bowser as the new Chair of our Board of Directors! Dr. Bowser brings a wealth of knowledge, leadership, and passion to our mission of improving the lives of those affected by ALS while advancing research for a cure.

Dr. Bowser, PhD, is a globally recognized leader in ALS research. He currently serves as Chief Scientific Officer, the John P. and Betty Van Denburgh Chair for Neuromuscular Disease, and professor and Chair of the Department of Translational Neuroscience at Barrow Neurological Institute. His pioneering work in discovering and validating ALS biomarkers has played a crucial role in advancing diagnostics, predicting disease progression, and evaluating potential treatments in clinical trials.

With decades of experience, Dr. Bowser has dedicated his career to understanding the mechanisms behind neurodegeneration, developing innovative drug delivery technologies, and leading groundbreaking research in ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. He is also the founder of two biotechnology companies and holds multiple patents based on his scientific discoveries.

As deputy chief scientific officer of Barrow Neurological Institute and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Dr. Bowser oversees extensive research efforts and helps shape the future of neurology-focused investigations. He is also the co-director of a national biorepository of ALS biofluid samples and a post-mortem tissue bank—resources that are vital in the global fight against ALS.

Dr. Bowser’s contributions to ALS research have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Sheila Essey Award, the highest international honor for ALS research. His work is currently supported by esteemed organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense, Target ALS, and ALS Arizona.
