Elizabeth Dole Home Care Act Passes Congress: A Major Victory for Veterans Living with ALS
We are thrilled to announce that the Elizabeth Dole Home Care Act (H.R. 542/S. 141) has passed Congress and is now on its way to President Biden for signature. This landmark legislation marks a monumental step forward in ensuring veterans living with ALS have access to the care they need, right at home.
What This Means for Veterans with ALS
The passage of this legislation will significantly improve access to in-home care for veterans battling ALS. By raising the cap on home care costs covered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the new law ensures that the VA will now pay up to 100% of home care costs. This level of support matches or even exceeds the cost of nursing home care, making it possible for veterans to receive high-quality care in the comfort of their own homes.
“This is a critical victory for veterans and their families who often face overwhelming financial burdens to maintain care at home,” said Denise Bailin, senior director of congressional affairs.
Advocacy at the Heart of Change
This legislative achievement is a testament to the power of advocacy. This year, ALS advocates across the country sent over 17,000 messages to federal lawmakers, urging them to support the Elizabeth Dole Home Care Act. Their voices, combined with the unwavering commitment of organizations working to support the ALS community, played a pivotal role in securing this victory.
A Step Forward for the ALS Community
The Elizabeth Dole Home Care Act is more than just a legislative win—it’s a lifeline for veterans living with ALS and their families. By removing financial barriers to in-home care, this law provides critical support, enabling families to focus on what truly matters: time together and quality of life.
Looking Ahead
We remain committed to advocating for policies that improve the lives of those affected by ALS. This victory is a reminder of what we can accomplish together, and we look forward to continuing the fight for meaningful change.
Stay tuned for updates as we await President Biden’s signature to officially enact this groundbreaking legislation. Together, we are making a difference!
